Consumer Science class is a Blake Middle School rotation class. This means it meets once a week for 8 or 9 weeks during 6th, 7th and 8th grade. Each week there are specific skills being developed. The recipes are written to provide opportunities for students to practice these skills. For example, when preparing flat bread veggie pizza, students are taught to properly use a chef's knife to slice and chop vegetables, and they are taught to safely operate the oven. Students have multiple opportunities to demonstrate those skills during that lesson. Another objective for that lesson is (don't tell) to get kids to eat more vegetables. Kids can demonstrate their willingness to expand their nutritional potential (I think I made that phrase up) by topping their pizza with a little cheese and sauce, and the most colorful palette of vegetables reasonable.
A little about Mrs. Cowell:
This is my eighth year teaching Consumer Science at Blake. For the 25 years prior to that, I taught Physical Education, and then Wellness at Medfield High School. Other than summer jobs, I have never worked anywhere other than for the Medfield Public Schools! This is a distinction I proudly share with my husband and our youngest son, MHS Physics and Envi Sci teacher, Mr. Cowell. All three of us were fortunate to be hired in Medfield upon college graduation, and we knew a great school system when we saw one! I'm so thrilled to also share this journey with our son, Blake World Language teacher, Mr. Cowell, and his wife who most of you know as the amazing "Dale Street Mrs. Cowell." We are truly blessed!
While teaching at the high school, I also had teaching assignments in physical education at Memorial, Wheelock and Blake. So the only school I haven't taught in is Dale! Don't ask me which is my favorite, though, because I will be forced to choose from among four great schools. Let's just say my favorite is whichever one you attend.
